The History of the Polish Language
Polish is a West Slavic language and part of the Lechitic language family. Polish is spoken mainly in Poland where it is the countryâs official language. It is also a recognised minority language in several surrounding countries in Central Europe, including Hungary, Lithuania, Slovakia and the Czech Republic.
Polish emerged in the 10th century around the establishment of the Polish state and adopted the Latin alphabet. This alphabet is used by about half of all Slavic languages, with the other half using the Cyrillic alphabet. Today, Polish is one of the most widely spoken languages in Europe. There are large minorities of Poles in several countries. including Lithuania and Belarus and 97% of Polandâs citizens speak Polish as their first language, making Poland the most linguistically homogeneous country in Europe.
The prevalence of Polish in the United Kingdom makes it an important language for reaching local communities. In England and Wales 1.6% of the population either cannot speak English or cannot speak it well. This means that translations into locally relevant languages can open the door to engagement with new audiences and promote inclusivity.
