    About Germany

The History of the German Language

German is a Germanic language and part of the Indo-European language family. German takes its roots from the Proto-Germanic language that is believed to have evolved around 2000 BCE near the Baltic Sea. The first written records of a Germanic language emerged in the first century when the Romans encountered Germanic speakers. At this point there was only a singular Germanic language with multiple dialects, however from around 700 AD the North Germanic, East Germanic and West Germanic languages divided from one another. German is a West Germanic language along with English and Dutch. During the Middle Ages, whilst English was being influenced by Viking settlers, a High German consonant shift was occurring on the continent, this shift separated High German from Low German.

Today written German is mostly uniform, while spoken German still maintains many dialects. High German dialects are spoken in Austria and Switzerland as well as in Germany in the central and southern highlands regions. Whilst Low German is spoken in the lowlands of Northern Germany, Standard High German is used across all of Germany in education, media, and government. Other dialects also exist both within and outside of Germany, including Luxembourgish in Luxembourg and Limburgish in the Netherlands. It is thought there may be as many as 250 distinct dialects of German.

German is the official or co-official language of Germany, Austria, Switzerland, Belgium, Luxembourg, and Liechtenstein. It is also recognised as a minority language in Denmark, Hungary, Italy, Kazakhstan, Namibia, Poland, Romania, Russia, Slovakia, the Czech Republic, and the Ukraine. It is the most widely spoken native language in Europe and the third most spoken foreign language in Europe.

In the United Kingdom, 50% of business identify German as the most useful foreign language. It is the most sought-after foreign language alongside French, as it allows businesses to build stronger relationships with their overseas contacts. As one of the most widely spoken language in the world German translations are popular for websites, marketing materials and technical manuals.
