The History of the Bengali Language
Bengali is an Indo-Aryan language and part of the Indo-Iranian subfamily within the Indo-European language family. The language began to emerge at least a thousand years ago, evolving from Sanskrit and Magad Prakrit. It was later influenced by Arabic and Persian and was used as an official court language by Muslim rulers during the medieval period. During the 19th and 20th century the literary standard form began to differ from the languageâs colloquial speech creating two main forms of the language.
Also, known as Bangla, Bengali is spoken by the Bengalis in the eastern region of the Indian subcontinent. The language is native to Bangladesh and the Indian state of West Bengal. Bengali is the official language of Bangladesh and is spoken as a first language by 98% of the countryâs population. It is also one of Indiaâs 22 scheduled languages and after Hindi is the most wide spoken of these languages.
The Bengali language is spoken across the globe by Bangladeshi and Indian communities. Significant Bengali communities exist in Pakistan, the Middle East, the United States, and the United Kingdom.
